Often, brides will spend time at the local tanning salon, wanting that beautiful golden tan for their wedding day. Unfortunately, too much natural or artificial sun can cause rash or uneven, leathered-looking skin. Other problems brides deal with are discoloration, scars, or acne. As the wedding day gets closer, nerves are typically high, which can cause changes in the skin, usually unfavorable. Since this is the most important day of your life, you want your skin to look healthy and radiant.

If you notice that your skin is having breakouts, rash, or discoloration, you need to determine the cause. Are you eating proper foods or just grabbing fast food because of your busy schedule? Are you taking time to apply sun block before going out into the sun? Are you using a good facial cleaner and moisturize faithfully every day? Have you recently started taking a new type of medication? All of these can cause your skin to have problems.

A dark discoloration is called hyper-pigmentation that comes from acne, poorly managed chemical peels, injury, laser therapy, or rash. Some things that would help are fading cream, fruit acid peel, if the scarring is bad, or if a severe problem, a chemical peel. All of these except the fading cream need to be performed by a licensed and reputable dermatologist who can start working with you months before your big day.

Another common problem is sun-derived hyper-pigmentaiton, which comes from being in the sun or in a tanning bed too long without proper protection. If you have light skin, you will notice this as freckles. Typically, the discoloration happens primarily on the nose and cheeks. Most people with this type of discoloration actually got it when they were in their twenties and thirties and it is just now showing up. To help with your wedding day, try fading creams, alpha-hydroxy acid products, which are typically creams, or a light fruit-peel. The creams you can buy at the drug store but the peels should only be done by a professional dermatologist.

Another common problem is caled Melasma. This is common among young people and when it happens later in life, it is called Seborrhoic Keratosis and Lentigos. Regardless, this is a flat, light golden brown or tan spot. When in the sun, you may discover wart-like spots that are a grayish brown. Usually, these spots will appear on the forearms, hands, neck, and head. Again, fading and alpha-hydroxy creams may help. If not, talk to your dermatologist to see if a chemical peel would help.

It is important to remember that correcting any type of skin discoloration does not happen overnight. It takes time and while some discolorations can be helped a lot, others cannot. Your best course of action is to avoid the things that will cause the problem. Talk with your doctor several months before your wedding if you have any concern to determine what will work best for you.
