When you walk down the aisle on your wedding day, you want to look stunning. To accomplish this, you will have to start shopping for a wedding gown about 10 months before your actual wedding day. You probably have an idea of the type of wedding you want, which will be crucial when choosing the right gown. What month will the wedding be held, will it be formal or informal, or will you be having a traditional church wedding or something in a local park?

Rather than spend countless hours driving from one end of town to the next, trying on hundreds of wedding gowns, you should start by looking at magazines and on the Internet to find the style you like. Once you know what it is you like, and the type of gown that best coordinates with your wedding, you can then narrow your shopping down, which will save you time and money.

Experts recommend that once you locate a few shops, you should go earlier in the day when you are alert, and wear your hair styled with makeup. This will provide you with a more realistic view of what you will look like on your wedding day. If you do not have time to have your hair put up, at least bring a hair clip or rubber band so you can pull it back and up to allow you to envision the final look. The same would be true if you wear glasses but plan to wear contact on your wedding day. Take your glasses and change into your contacts or just go shopping with your contacts.

Take with you your mom and one or two close friends. Their role is to help you choose a gown that is most flattering, not to dissuade you from buying the type of gown you want. After all, an honest opinion is not a bad thing. Just keep in mind that the final choice is yours to make but listen to the comments made by those with you.

In addition to looking great, you want to be comfortable. Even if your wedding is less formal, you will be wearing your wedding gown for approximately two to three hours and for formal weddings, much longer. You want the gown to be easy to move in when dancing, comfortable to sit in with out wrinkling and overall the perfect fit.

Do not be nervous about accentuating your best features. If you have cleavage, show it off with taste. If you have a small waist, choose a gown that shows it off. If you have toned arms that most women would die for, consider a strapless dress. Every woman has a beautiful body and one or more features that are her best. Therefore, choose gowns that make you look the best based on what you have.

Some wedding gowns can be created so they change somewhat after the wedding ceremony into a more comfortable gown. Perhaps the train completely detaches so your gown is now like an evening gown that is more functional for the reception. Some are designed where the top actually changes into a sleeveless top rather than a full-sleeved jacket, making movement easier. The key is to allow yourself adequate time and go shopping with a good idea of what you want.
