Every wedding shower should be a joyous occasion where family and friends can get together in celebration of a newly engaged couple. It should also be a time of visiting, eating, drinking, and of course, playing games. The entire legend of the wedding shower has interesting roots. A Dutch girls father was very unhappy with her choice of husbands and therefore, refused to give her a dowry. For this reason, the girls friends came to the rescue by throwing her a shower.
Choose games for the wedding shower that are entertaining, heartfelt, and even silly. Games are an excellent way to break the ice, especially if there are a number of people gathered who have never met before. If you like, you can play a few games once everyone arrives, a few after the refreshments have been served, and then one or two more just before the shower ends. Just remember to have fun! Here are a few great choices that have proven to be very popular:
Traditional Purse Bingo With this game, each guest (usually all women) holds out her purse in front while someone reads off a list of items that one would expect to find. The woman that pulls out the item out of her purse first gets the B and a small gift. The next item is read and again, the first woman to pull the item out of her purse gets the I and another small gift. At the end, the woman who spelled out BINGO gets a grand prize. Typically, the items listed would include a comb or hairbrush, lipstick, lotion, and Kleenex. To make the game more challenging, throw in a few unusual items such as a lighted mirror or sewing kit.
Safety Pins This game involves giving each person a safety pin when arriving for the party. The pin will be clipped onto the clothing and everyone will be given a specific word such as party, wedding, bride, or honeymoon. Everyone will hear what each persons word is and whenever he or she hear someone use their word throughout the shower in normal conversation without thinking about it, their safety pin can be taken. The person that ends up with the most safety pins at the end of the wedding shower will receive a prize.
Ribbon Bouquet During the time the bride starts opening her gifts, one of her close friends starts collecting ribbons from the gifts, which will be used to create a ribbon bouquet. This is what the bride will carry at the rehearsal instead of flowers. An old folklore states that the number of ribbons broken by the bride while opening gifts equates to how many children she and the groom will have together.
Marriage Recipe/b> Every guest is provided with a recipe card and pen and asked to write down their own version of the perfect recipe for a happy and healthy marriage. As the bride reads aloud each of the cards, she and the groom have to guess which guest wrote what.
Photo Album Each guest is asked to bring a photo of herself and the bride and place it inside a purchase frame. As you go around and everyone holds up their photo, they tell a special or funny story about time spent with the bride. After the story, the photos are given to the bride for her to proudly display in her new home.
