If you are planning to have your wedding catered, you want to serve your guest the best without spending a small fortune. After months and months of planning your wedding, the reception should be a relaxing time not just for your guest, but also for the bride and groom. You want to have the opportunity to sit back, enjoy some food, and know that the caterer has everything under control. As you start your search for a qualified caterer, you want one that has worked on wedding receptions before and has references. A good caterer will show you various seating and serving styles, and have a nice menu that can accommodate a number of tastes.

A popular choice is the food station, which is a modernized version of the buffet. With this setup, different tables are setup for different foods whereas with a buffet, guests would walk down one long table where all the food was displayed. For the food station, you might have one table for salads, one table for sandwiches, one table for meat, one table for dessert, and one table drinks. The idea is that this setup is easier to manage and moves the guests through quicker and more conveniently, so they can eat and have plenty of time for dancing and mingling.

The seated arrangement is also popular but keep in mind that you will require servers so this can be a bit more expensive. However, if you were having a formal wedding, this would be the best option. Rather than serve the old dry chicken that most people expect, you want to ensure the caterer serves only fresh foods that have been carefully prepared and diverse.

You want to work with your caterer regarding time so they know exactly what time to serve the food. It is important that you have in a written and signed contract the number of hours the caterer will provide, what will be served, how many servers will be present, and how much cleanup is included. Additionally, ask about overtime just in case things run over, which they do sometimes. You also need to provide the caterer with any special meal request. In fact, it is always nice to have a few plates prepared for diabetics and vegetarians.

Some wedding receptions include hors doeuvres and cocktails only rather than a full meal. Obviously, this will cost less and typically, you can choose the number of appetizers you want, which provides a little more variety. A good option is finger food, which could be cracker and sandwich appetizers. You can even have petit fours served with after dinner drinks once the cake has been cut.

Generally, a wedding reception will last around three hours. During this time, you would have enough time for a sit down or buffet-style dinner, or simple appetizers along with music and dancing. To have a nice wedding reception, you do not have to spend an exorbitant amount of money as long as you work with a good caterer.
