When you get ready to shop for your wedding bands, you will quickly discover a vast array of options. You would think it would be easy to buy a wedding band by simply walking into a jewelry store and walking out with the jewelry. Unfortunately, there are common mistakes made that you should avoid.
Most importantly, make sure you allow yourself appropriate time. In other words, do not be in a hurry. If you need to have a wedding band custom made or even customized from an in stock ring, most jewelers will need anywhere from four to six weeks. For this reason, you should allow a minimum of eight weeks, and preferably three months to choose and purchase your wedding bands. Another consideration is accurate finger sizing. For some reason, people often buy rings that are too large for their finger. A couple rules to follow - if you are buying a wider band, then you will need a larger size, a thinner band would be a little smaller in size, and the best time of the day to try on rings is in the morning when your hands are not swollen. Also keep in mind that heat or cold can affect how a ring fits. If you do find that your ring does not fit well after the wedding, you can always have the size modified.
Do your homework before going to buy your wedding bands. This means to research the differences between metals such as yellow and white gold, titanium, and platinum. Learn the four Cs, which are comprised of cut, clarity, color, and carat. Another important thing to remember that people often get confused about is that there is a difference between carat and karat. Carat refers to the diamond and its weight while karat refers to the quality of gold, which would be better known as 12K, 14K, 18K, 24K, etc. Take your engagement ring with you to make a nice match. Although most engagement rings are designed as a stand-alone piece of jewelry, you want the wedding band to enhance the ring. Make sure the wedding band compliments the engagement ring rather than overtakes it.
Although most people shop for wedding bands in jewelry stores found in malls, keep your options open, not that this is a bad idea, but in truth, you will pay more because of high overhead. Other options to consider are estate sales, auctions, or wholesalers where you can buy the band or purchase any diamonds separate from the band, which will save you money. Do not settle on the first ring you like. Just remember this ring is something you will be wearing for the rest of your life - you want it to be perfect.
