The decision of the wedding officiant is another important consideration that will arise when you are planning your wedding. The officiant does a lot to set the tone of the ceremony. Typically, the officiant will give a brief message or sermon (varies depending on the couple). This message is usually about 20 minutes in legnth and takes up a good portion of the ceremony. Moreover the officiant typically dictates the course of the ceremony and interacts with all of the people witnessing or taking part in the ceremony. The key with the officiant is to select a person that will deliver an appropriate message and is a good speaker. A poor officiant can ruin the wedding ceremony, alienate the guests, or worse yet, put them to sleep with boredom.

Often times family or the bride or groom will try to make to make sure that Pastor so and so will be conducting the ceremony. This is an area that should be navigated with care, especially there are deap seated family tensions and emotions are involved. Sometimes a compromise is neccessary. If a compromise is not possible, it is important to be firm, emphasize why your choice for an officiant would be optimal.

Often times, to have a certain officiant or wedding site, you may be required to take a class, series or classes, or do pre-maritial counseling. When you are thinking about an officiant, be sure to ask about the requirements for having that officiant. It can sometimes be bad to be surprised by requirements in the last month or two of wedding preparation. Try to ask about these things up front so that you can prepare, decide and allocate time.

Finally, when you are selecting a wedding officiant, you will want to talk to the officiant about what he will be talking about and see if you can have some input into the message that the officiant will give. Some officiants want to have complete control over the message, others want input, and still others may provide the message to you prior to the ceremony for you to review. When you are working with an officiant, it is important to know the officiants style to cooperate with the officiant effectively.
