The prelude is designed to provide guests with music while they wait for the ceremony itself to begin. Historically, the prelude includes quiet, and meditative classical music that is designed to evoke the solemnity and joy typical of a marriage ceremony. However, the prelude has now evolved into a time to entertain guests. Either way, the prelude typically starts from 10 to 20 minutes before the ceremony. The musician that is in charge of the prelude should generally plan to be able to play anywhere from 5 to 15 songs, depending on the legnth of the prelude. The need for additional songs can arise if the ceremony starts later than it was intended to start. The prelude generally sets the overall tone for the wedding.
