Not all weddings have a program but they are a nice addition. The purpose of a program is to identify and honor all the people involved in your wedding. In addition, the program makes a nice keepsake for guests and family.
If you plan having a program for your wedding, you want to make sure the outline provides the order of events, such as opening music, families being seated, lighting of candles, etc., and identifies each member of your party. Always triple check to make sure you did not leave anyone out because this is easy to do and of course triple check spelling. Your program will also include the date, time, location of the wedding, the clergy's name, title of music played along with the names of the musicians, names of soloists, name of readings, and the reader's name.
While these are the standard features of a wedding program, there are optional features that you might want to consider. For example, you could include special notes of gratitude to each set of parents, a special message to the guests, poetry, readings, or even a message touching on your religion or specific wedding traditions.
Many years ago, programs had to be printed by a professional printer but with the quality of printers available today and easy to use computer software, programs can be professionally created at home, which will save you a ton of money. In addition, you will save time by being able to create a design on your own schedule. If you do not have time to sit down for hours to choose a design or to create your own, you will find a multitude of online services that have templates from which to choose. You can cut the time down when choosing your programs by about two thirds or more by going this route. Again, programs are not required but they do add a nice final touch to your wedding that everyone will enjoy.
