There is nothing more adorable than watching a precious Flower Girl as she shyly makes her way down the aisle, carefully and often hesitantly, tossing flower petals out of the basket. Typically, the Flower Girl and Ring Bearer steal the show at least for a few minutes. To create a magical moment, you need to choose the right dress for the Flower Girl, one that is not too childish and not too grown up.

The first thing to consider is the time of year when you are getting married. If you are planning a wedding during the colder fall or winter months, you want to choose colors that are deep, rich, and made from taffeta or velvet. Tights would also be cute and warm. Not only will this help keep the Flower Girl warm and comfortable, but also she will look darling and appropriate for the season. If you were planning a spring or summer wedding, you would choose lighter fabrics such as cotton or silk. Sashes are always nice as well as bows and lace. A nice ballet-type slipper or patent leather shoe would be perfect and comfortable, used with ankle socks.

The style of dress the Flower Girl wears has changed very little over the years. You can choose either a short or a long style but keep the young girl theme going in the style. Of course, you will choose a dress that coordinates with your wedding, whether formal or informal. When choosing the color, the Flower Girls dress should be a compliment to your wedding gown. If you like, you can choose a pure white dress or a color that matches that of your bridal party.

Remember that the Flower Girl is usually young and therefore, comfort needs to be a major consideration. If her shoes are adorable but hurt her feet, she is not going to be focused on her role in the wedding. If her dress is lacy and amazing but scratches, she will fidget throughout the ceremony. Additionally, if her dress is made from too hot of a fabric or not warm enough for the season, she is going to be miserable. Because the Flower Girl is young, the proper attire will help her make it through the ceremony without any problem.

Another important factor of the fabric is wrinkling. Since little girls do not sit still long, you want something that will look fresh and crisp as she walks down the aisle. Some of the best fabrics for avoiding wrinkling are velvet or silk. Your best option, regardless of the fabric chosen, is to dress the Flower Girl at the very last minute and make sure she does not hve anything to eat or drink once the dress is on.

Again, the length of the Flower Girls dress is your choice as there is no right or wrong. However, when choosing the length you should consider a few things. For example, if the girl is very young, a long gown could cause her to trip so a short style would be a better choice. For the Flower Girl aged three to eight, a Princess style, which is knee length, is perfect. For the older Flower Girl, she would probably be happier with something a little shorter or full length.

If you are on a tight budget for your upcoming wedding, you can choose a special birthday or party dress, which might be something the Flower Girl already has or one that can be purchased at a much lower cost. While not always possible, try to choose a dress that could be worn again for church or parties rather than a one-time dress.
