Located in the eastern portion of South Pacific, you will find the gateway
and natural base of European explorers from long ago. This island is large,
abundant, and a favorite destination for many people. Back in the 18th
century, the island of Tahiti was added to the world maps. Eventually,
Papeete, which is the capital city, grew into a major shipping crossroads.
In fact, Papeete winds around one of the busiest and most picturesque
harbors in South Pacific.
When you travel along the crowded boulevard of Pomare, the avenue running
along the waterfront of Papette, you will find a link from the city to the
trendy suburban districts. The island of Tahiti is so well developed, some
of the locals are required to travel as long as two hours going to work and
two hours coming home from work. However, if you want excitement on your
honeymoon, you will discover numerous chic boutiques and specialty shops, a
fantastic Municipal Market, and a wonderful blend of Chinese, French, and
Polynesian cultures.
From Tahiti, you can travel to Bora Bora, Huahine, and Moorea, which are
less developed and more remote. For getting around, you can rent a car,
rent a scooter, grab a taxi, or take a bus. If you prefer getting an early
start, public buses start running around 5:00 a.m. The buses can be taken
for only $.90 until 6:00 p.m., and then $1.50 after.
Keep in mind that the street crime in Papeete has taken a severe rise. If
you go on boulevard Pomare and stick to the busy parks, you will probably
be safe. However, after dark, it is best to stay off all side streets.
During the day, as long as you stay in areas that are crowded, generally,
you will be fine. The people in Tahiti are friendly and the merchandise
beautiful.
If you want to soak up some sun, you can venture down to the beach and bask
while enjoying the sound of crashing waves. The food in Tahiti is diverse,
with a Polynesian flavor. You will enjoy wonderful fresh fruits, almost too
good to be real. Fish is another island favorite and you will enjoy a
multitude of special dishes, specific to the island. This is a beautiful
place to visit and as long as you pay attention to the rules and use common
sense, you can have a wonderful honeymoon.
