An engagement photograph is a special photograph taken of the future bride and groom as a way of announcing the upcoming wedding. After you become engaged, you and your future spouse will need to decide on the type of photo you want taken to announce your engagement to the world. Typically, this photograph is printed in the local newspaper as well as newspapers for the bride or grooms parents if they live in another city or state. The engagement photograph is taken and printed about one year prior to the wedding, meaning this needs to be done shortly after the engagement.

Many couples prefer to have their engagement photograph taken in a casual setting. If you look at your local newspaper, you will see all types of photographs but many set outdoors or with the family pet. If you want a more formal photograph, that is perfectly fine too. There is no right or wrong, as you want your engagement photograph to reflect your personalities and interest.

To ensure you have the greatest photograph possible, you want to establish a strong bond with the photographer so he or she can learn about your personality and style. Be sure to interact with the photographer and spend adequate time to build a strong understanding of what is expected of you as well as what you, expect from them.

A great engagement photograph is one that is taken at a location important to you and your loved one. Perhaps you have a lush, green park where the two of you often go to have picnics, maybe you love spending time at the lake, boating on hot summer days, or perhaps you are both avid snow skiers. Choose a location that means something to you so the people seeing the photograph can enjoy a piece of your life.

To ensure the engagement photograph looks the best, have your hair and makeup done the morning before the session. This will allow you to look fresh and vibrant. You also want to wear outfits that are complimentary and coordinating. Do not choose exact outfits but choose attire that match in style and color. For instance, if you have chosen an outdoor setting during the fall, perhaps standing together on a small arched bridge with beautiful trees of fall colors all around, choose color clothing that includes deep colors such as burgundy, green, red, orange, and blues, with just a touch of cream or ivory.

Be creative with your engagement photograph and have fun. This too is an important day as you spread the word that you are dedicating yourlife to someone you love. Once the photograph is done, send copies to the newspapers, which are generally in black and white. Keep the color copy, which will be passed out to close family and friends, and then if you like, displayed at your wedding.
