Although there is a superstition that says the groom should never see the bride before the wedding ceremony, this is really just a holdover from the days when the bride and groom never met because the wedding was arranged. Today, the reasons for taking wedding photos before the ceremony and do away with old superstitions are more practical. The most practical reason is that both the bride and groom will be fresh for the pictures. Sometimes by the end of a ceremony, the couple may be overheated and feeling a bit tired. If the photographer is going to take photos of the process of preparing for the ceremony as well as taking formal portraits, he should show up about three hours before the ceremony and go to the place where the bride is getting ready. These intimate photos of the woman surrounded by friends as she prepares for the biggest day of her life are often the most cherished ones for the bridesmaids.

The natural order of the day is preserved if the groom then joins the bride to have photos taken. The advantage of a church still sitting empty provides time to relax. There is also more opportunity for nice outdoor pictures. For instance, in front of the stained glass doors, which may be difficult after the ceremony and guests are milling about on the lawn. Taking the photos before the ceremony also means the photographer will have a bit more time to carefully set up each pose and catch some romantic, candid shots. When photos are taken after the wedding, couples can feel rushed knowing their guests are waiting for them at the reception.

After the bride and groom are photographed together in a number of poses, the photographer will usually move on to the group pictures with the immediate family. Again, the family members will still be fresh and comfortable for the photos, ensuring quality pictures. If you have young nieces or nephews in the wedding, they will be less inclined to fidget or whine during the photos if they have not been standing throughout the ceremony already. Then, when you have completed the photos that include them, allow the youngest children to take a break and relax with their parents before the ceremony starts.

The last set of photos will be those taken with sorority sisters, Godparents, or special friends. These, too, are nice to take before the ceremony. This way, when the wedding ceremony is over your friends can move on to the reception rather than stand around waiting for their turn with the photographer. The flow of your wedding day is so important to the feeling of the day.

Taking the photos beforehand can really help. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the bridal party can immediately move on to the celebration, riding the wave of emotion that is the highlight of a wedding, instead of standing for hours for pictures. Less rush, more time and the freedom to join your guests immediately following the ceremony is a wonderful plus. When you see how great your photos turn out, you will know that taking the photographs prior to the ceremony was a great idea.
