When it comes time for the wedding speech, typically the Best Man has the responsibility of acting as toastmaster. He is the person that makes a list of each person who will offer a toast and will be responsible for setting the rules for what is and is not acceptable.
Many receptions fail to incorporate a microphone for the couple to use during the toast time. This is important since many people sitting toward the back miss the fun of hearing what is being said. Therefore, be sure there is a microphone available for the people toasting to use. Toasts are done during various times of the wedding process, as you will see below. Keep in mind that this is the order in which the toasts should take place:
Wedding Rehearsal
- Best Man will toast the Bride
- Bride will toast the Groom
- Groom will toast the Brides Mother
- Brides Father will toast the Grooms parents
Wedding Reception
- Best Man toasts the Bride and Groom
- Groom toasts his new Bride and her family
- The two fathers will toast both the Bride and Groom as a married couple
- Bride and Groom offer a toast to each other
To make the perfect toast, there are some important things to remember:
- Keep the toasts are short
- Stand up so everyone can see and hear better
- Have the speech written and practiced so you do not start to wander away from the speech
- When toasting someone, the name should be used. For instance, instead of saying, This toast is for the new bride and groom, you want to say, This toast is to Melissa and John, the new bride and groom
- Be sure witty anecdotes are added in to keep things fun and light
- Speak slowly, loudly, and clearly so everyone can hear
- Wait to drink alcohol beverages until after you give your toast so the words spoken are clear
- Make sure the speech is tailored specifically to the newly married couple
