Planning a wedding consists of many decisions. There is the chapel to find, the minister and music to hire, the flowers to choose, and the wedding MC to consider. The role of the MC is an important one, and not to be taken lightly. You want to have a high level of confidence in the person that will be your MC and entrust them with a very important job. Therefore, put as much effort into choosing an appropriate MC as you would the photographer or cake decorator.
You need to be very clear as to what the role of the MC will entail. The MC will need adequate time to prepare so you need to schedule time for discussion to ensure there are no last minute surprises. Start by putting together an agenda of the wedding and reception's activities. You want the agenda to be clear and concise so the MC knows exactly what they are called to do. If you want the MC to acknowledge specific people, you need to let them know. If there are types of jokes that you are not comfortable with, clearly define the limitations. The MC has the job of ensuring things do not get out of control, that things run smoothly.
Carry a notepad to jot down special details as they arise. Many times, the bride and groom make a list thinking it is all-inclusive. Then when small things come up, they forget to update the MC, causing things not to run the way anticipated. These notes will help ensure that nothing is missed, no matter how small. When you consider what all a wedding and reception consist of, it is no wonder people stress. The MC can help take some of the overload, allowing for a more enjoyable wedding.
One thing that many people miss when working with a wedding MC is where elderly people will sit at both wedding and reception. Many elderly people cannot hear well and if they are lead to seating in the middle to back of the room, more than likely, they will not be able to enjoy the ceremony. Show some consideration and provide proper seating for older people. The same would be true for the traditional wedding line immediately following the wedding ceremony. If you have a medium to large wedding, elderly people have a difficult time waiting for long periods to pass through the line to offer their congratulations to the bride and groom. By seating older people together, they can be lead through the line ahead of others, allowing them to get through and seated comfortably at the reception.
There are so many things to consider so choose your wedding MC wisely and work closely ensuring they understand your preferences. This one investment will save you tremendous stress, allowing you to focus on getting married.
