Planning a military wedding comes with its own special rules and obstacles.
Although all of these challenges can be met with success, you will need to
look at your wedding in a little different light over that of a traditional
wedding. One of the most important aspects of a military wedding is
preparing you to become a military wife. This is a different lifestyle that
while exciting and honorable, it can sometimes be difficult. You might be
moving around a lot, which affects friendships and disrupts the home. You
need to have a mindset of adventure, new beginnings, and support to be a good
military wife.
Regardless of whether the wedding is being held in a civilian or military
chapel, the groom will wear the uniform of the military branch he represents
to include Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or Coast Guard. Additionally, a
Marine will wear white gloves and carry an impressive saber. If the groom is
in the Navy or Coast Guard, he will wear a sword. Men in the military getting
married will be adorned with any military decorations in place of the
traditional boutonniere. If the ushers of the wedding are or were in the
military, they too should wear their respective uniform. For those attendants
that are civilians, it gets a little trickier since not all attendants will be
dressed alike. In this type situation, the groom usually conforms to whatever
the civilians are wearing for obvious reasons - the civilians cannot wear
uniforms.
If the bride is the one in the military, she has the choice to marry in uniform
or to marry in a traditional wedding dress. The majority of brides in the
military choose traditional over military in that this is a special day and they
want to look magnificent. If the bride were to wear her uniform, she would still
hold her flower bouquet as she walks down the aisle. Finally, the bride will
stand to the right-hand side of the groom during the wedding since the sword is
on the groom's left-hand side.
To help you after the wedding, here are a few tips that can make things much
easier to manage:
- If you will be relocating after the wedding, gather as much information as
possible about your new home before moving.
- If you will be working when you relocate, be prepared with updated resumes
and have several professional suits for interviews.
- If your new husband should be deployed with you remaining in the home, be
prepared to write love letters, put together gift packages, and do whatever
it takes to keep the marriage growing strong. Deployment is a stressful
situation and unless the two of you agree that you will do whatever it takes
to have a lifelong marriage, when confronted with difficult emotions, your
marriage could suffer.
- As a military wife, you will quickly discover that you will be invited to
many functions to be alongside your husband. For this reason, learn the
appropriate behavior and expectations so you will enjoy the function and
provide the appropriate support to your husband.
